Hi, does the FN have, or have they got, at present a ship called PARIS? In the past they had a battleship named after that city on La Seine. ♍🇵🇱🇨🇵

The Charles de Gaulle (R91), the French medium-sized nuclear aircraft carrier, was a challenge for France when the decision was taken to build her.
She's slightly bigger than the sister ships Clemenceau and Foch but has more powerful American-built steam catapults, which allow her to operate an Hawkeye.
At present, she is the only non-American nuclear aircraft carrier in the world and the Dassault Rafales M (for Marine) arre the only non-American aircraft fully oprerable on/from US carriers. All French Navy Rafale pilots are therefore US Navy qualified, which is far from being symbolic. Eurofighter Typhoons don't have navalized versions, nor do Saab Drakens. - Fly safe!

The QE class launch displacement was 65k (QE) and 70k (POW). ie that’s the empty hull displacement. Prince of Wales had extra 5k of systems installed before launch, Queen Elizabeth after launch.

Add fuel, weapons, stores and crew and both top out with a full warload of 85k. ie full displacement.

The operating capacity is 72 F35B (4 squadrons) and eight helicopters.

the main problem of France : incompetent and corrupted leaders they are wasting moneys for useless projects and their own benefits
but we have the Rafale, a much better multirole jet fighter than the stinking F-35 Starfighter II

France deserves some credit on this. If you look at their budget, compared to Britain, they are really killing it from the carrier department. To develop such a ship on a small platform is commendable. Sure there are shortcomings, but they are capable. Look at the Queen Elizabeth class carriers of Britain to compare. Of course F-35s can change that calculus considerably in the future.

French military are limited in their projects by the amount of money given by the government (which has been in constant decline since the end of the Cold War). Sure, if they had more money, they would have 3 carriers, more planes, more tanks, ...

The problem with CATOBAR is that France didn't make them back in the 2000's. The US made them for France.
So when France decided not to go to war in Irak in 2003, the US showed the middle finger to France with their CATOBAR.
France wouldn't launch any plane from the CDG during 2 years... A well kept secret... And US.... very good allies.... as always

Catapult take off's are ok but not necessarily the best method, both ski jumps and catapults work well depending on other factors.

Ответить
@HenriHattar
@HenriHattar - 14.04.2024 18:34

The British carriers , which are 50% LARGER than this half obsolete carrier and is faster and does NOT need to have a capability......To launch aircraft, it is only required that the catapult be able to propel the aircraft to takeoff speed for its given weight, with the appropriate safety margin of speed. The catapult speed can be reduced by the amount of any headwind. This contradicts this guy and the Brit carriers don't need to be moving to launch. As this guy says, the Brits have 2 NEW and the French 1 OLD. You decide which one you think would be better?

Ответить
@HenriHattar
@HenriHattar - 14.04.2024 18:24

This IS the Truth, first the CDG is not that new, BUT read this... basically how many aircraft that can be launched or recovered in a 24 hour period. The Queen Elizabeth is 50% larger and can do about 110 for 36 jets. Based on US Navy’s carrier displacement vs sortie rate studies, the Charles de Gaulle can only do between 50 and 55. This gives an edge to the QE, as it can launch more aircraft to keep an eye on whats happening around it. If it has to put together a quick strike package, it can do it faster due to the higher sortie rate...The Raffale is,, by the way a 4th gen aircraft while the British are flying 5th Gen. There is nothing special about the CDG.

THE French Aircraft carrier has spent most of its life in dry dock its also 40 years old. Wait to when we get our full procurement plus we use the V22 Osprey and in 2024 will are getting 138 F35B Lightning jet's in the next 10 years. And 48 by 2025. As well as other procurements which will be on a another level.

This is good against opponents that have limited air assets, but as we seen in recent conflicts, surface ships are very vulnerable to swarm missile attacks, drones, and boat drones. If the French faced a determined enemy, a few hundred drones can put this ship out of service and it only has one.

Impressive. I had no idea any country apart from the U.S. had such capabilities.

However, in typical fashion, they have hamstrung themselves by failing to provide redundancy.

Maintaining their “savoir faire” is great in principle, but almost meaningless in practice, since they will be unable to project air power during refits.
